Welcome to the Backbeach Cafe & Restaurant
The Back Beach of Bunbury is the meeting place for many locals and visitors to the area, and it has been that way for thousands of years.
Back in the 90’s a restaurant was built in between two change rooms and it soon became a favourite place to eat, drink and relax, while overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Since then the building has undergone many changes and has been a place where milestones have been celebrated, memories made, and has been a staple in the regions hospitality scene.
In 2015, Miranda and Clayton Hirsch, took over the operations of the business and aptly named it, The Backbeach Cafe & Restaurant.
Fast forward to the current day and our passion for all things Fresh, Local and Simple, comes out in the food, drinks and dining experience for all those that enjoy this unique location.
We invite you to come along, for either Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner or even just a coffee and cake to enjoy the views and more importantly the energy and the food that the Backbeach Cafe & restaurant embodies.

Went there for a Friday night dinner, the staff were great it was a nice chilled out atmosphere in q beautiful setting... and the food was out of this world good. My partner had a sirloin steak with vegetables and I had the nourish bowl and we both couldn't stop going on about how great they were. Every mouthful was heavenly! Asked for hollandaise sauce on the side of eggs and told 'in Europe you wouldn't get that'.Also asked for some hot... water for my coffee and charged $6.00 for 2 cups. Then got a tiny metal jug....$1 for boiling water. Travelled all over the world and throughout Australia and NEVER been charged for a little bit of hot water. Coffee is $6 and the 50c for ' a blue cup' whatever that means. The bill was $8.00 more than the menu. Very disappointing. Very rude manager.read more

Fantastic spot to dine overlooking the ocean. Food was delicious, fresh, plentiful and well prepared. Great value for... money. The gentleman that owns the place can be a but rough but not rude in any way. Service was friendly and quick. We visited on a Sunday lunch and out group of 6 people all got their dishes served together and in less than 20min from ordering.Definitely a must try!read more
I'm so glad I didn't get put off by previous reviews I had read on the customer service here!Absolutely Fantastic 5... Star Customer Service, all the staff were lovely & so attentive. Food was great, The view & location is amazing.The only issue was how chilly it is inside, we sat in the restaurant on the lower level and still could not feel any warmth from the heating, that being said it was a very cold day.read more

So we were coming in here for a drink and decided to have a late lunch as well. Glad we did because the food was... amazing. It actually matched the stunning views. If ur around the Bunbury area I’d recommend popping in. The service great. Hope to visit more oftenread more
Came down from Perth for belated Valentine's dinner. We started of with sticky pork belly and a trio of oysters... (natural, chilli and lime, kilpatrick) for entrees. My husband could of had another dozen and the pork belly was so so delicious. Then we had a scotch filet and a porterhouse steak both with chips and salad. They were cooked as we liked them medium rare and quite big servings. Hubby also had the waffagato for dessert. For drinks house draught beer, Jacks and Coke and 2 Midora splice. So refreshing. Would definitely recommend it for not only the food but the ocean view.read more

My friend and i have been here around 3 times now in the last couple months. The first time we came, they didnt have... their milk order in so we got given a lactose free milk that didnt look great... coffee was black and tasted horrid.. we shrugged it off, had a laugh but came back the next week to see if it was just a bad day... nup.. same thing, coffee was burnt. The owner was walking around behind the counter in his thongs, thru to the kitchen and yelling at staff. The third time we came for breakfast and as we went to walk thru the door we were greeted by the owner. He was swearing and trying to be funny but was actually off putting. When we were ordering he was teaching another staff member how to make coffees but while doing so he was coming around to the till to make sure the staff were capable of doing the order and also presuming every person was ordering. We wanted to get the share Bruchetta bit was told rudely that the menu had been changed.. a bit of a note or a post about a new menu would have been great.We got the breakfast bruchetta.. 😒🙄 now if you love pesto ALL over your plate, cold and more pesto then thats great... wasnt for us... we stayed there for a while and ordered cake. Well... the passionfruit cheese cake when cut, curled up and you could tell it had been there a while. no taste amd stale. The coconut lemon slice.. well next time.. if there is a next time ill be bringing my bloody electric knife or even a sledge hammer to cut it up to eat it.you could use it to knock someone out. It was soo hard you couldnt eat it.Now im all for giving a place a go, but each time it got worse. No wonder people drive past bunbury when visiting this way because of the lack of support, stressed staff. we spent alot of money here but noone even batted an eyelid when we went to talk to someone. Utterly embarrasing. Im sorry but i wont be back thats for sure.read more

Took my daughter for a special afternoon tea today. To say I’m sorry we went there would be an understatement! My first time wasn't bad, good food, average customer service. Right now it's my second time here and on this one I... brought some friends. Very bad customer service experience. My friends were just trying a banana bread leftovers for the little kids they had and most of us have already ordered main dishes. This bold man came rudely saying that we cannot have our banana bread and asking few times if we had ordered. After few minutes came again to check if we were having the banana bread and asking again if we had ordered. To make it worst, the food wasn't so good. Some of my friends that were about to order left the place and prefer going somewhere else.I think we wouldn't come here again.read more

The service is terrible! We are a group of 4 people and were directed to a table with a view. After a few minutes,... one of the staff was very unfriendly and rude, compelling us to move (To a table away from the view) because she had a table of 5 which were also NOT booked! We said we loved the view. She started becoming annoyed and was pushing us away. At this point, we couldn’t have enjoyed our lunch in Bunbury. We felt we were being discriminated against. What happened was that we said, ‘but we prefer the view, do we absolutely HAVE to move?’ She repeated her question again as if we couldn’t understand what she said. We answered, “Yes we understand you, but do we have a choice if we wanted this table? She then answered impolitely, “Yes you have a choice, stay if you’d like!”, and walked away hurriedly. A few moments later, she came back saying she had another table, now a table of 6, reserved but the staff forgot to reserve the table. Firstly, the staff made the mistake of not reserving the table of 6 and wasn’t even apologetic about it. She asked us to move again, looking annoyed and frustrated at us not wanting to budge. She stormed off saying, “look, if you don’t want to move, you can stay here!” After some discussion, we decided not to have lunch at Backbeach. And our holiday’s first destination at Bunbury turned out to be an unpleasant one. Safe to say we will not be back here because the table staff is rude and discriminating.read more

We held a work baby shower in their club room. From planning to booking, the communication and correspondence could not... be faulted. At the initial meeting with Miranda, I felt no hesitation in booking the venue. We were offered a set menu (not limited) to cater for all dietary needs. Separate billing was offered, which made planning on our side much easier. From start to finish, our group of 20+ was catered for and looked after. Casual dining is fantastic, nothing was any trouble and being child friendly meant mums could enjoy the day. The meals were delicious and timed perfectly. I have no problem in recommending the Backbeach Cafe & Restaurant for any type of event and we will be sure to book with them again. #supportlocalread more

I chose the kids serve of pancakes. It was for kids Under 12 but staff allowed it this time. After Gastric sleeve... surgery it’s a perfect portion. The waitperson let me know it is served on a plastic plate. I asked if they would mind changing to real plate. Very surprisingly the answer was no. Me: ‘Sorry, did you say know I can’t have a real plate?’Waiter: Yes, that’s how it’s served! That’s what the kitchen staff do! We can’t change!Me: ‘really? Back Beach Cafe is my favourite eating place in Bunbury. The staff are always friendly, the views of the beach are... fabulous, you can sit comfortably inside in the air conditioning or outside in the breeze. The food is delicious and portion sizes always leave you full. My go to meal is the chicken burger, love how you get a proper piece of chicken breast rather than the patties served at most other places I’ve tried. The sweet breakfast pancakes are the nicest I’ve had anywhere. My husband and my father loved the waygu burgers and my mum said the chicken parmigiana was the best she’s ever had. Definitely recommend this place and will keep coming back for the great atmosphere and terrific meals 😀😀😀😀read more

As soon as we arrived and saw the massive queue with ONE cashier taking orders which told me there’d be no table... service which was my first “urgh” moment. To then get showed our seating area - FULL of flies, I felt like Candyman.. And so so hot! Overhearing there’s a minimum of 45 minute wait for food, however the place wasn’t that full by this point so that confused me.. Being told at our table it’ll be 30 minutes, over an hour later and even though my meal was lovely (fish and chips) we did have problems with other meals. The salmon wasn’t overly nice, we were offered a discount straight away for this which was very forthcoming, however, there probably should be some sort of description on the Parma to say it does in fact include bacon/ham.. We have people at our table who in fact cannot consume pork products.. Then having the meal taken away for a fresh replacement, wasn’t so, it was scraped off to find bacon still present half way through. The older gentleman there which I assume was the manager, I don’t know why he is in customer service in the first placw as he did not handle complaints very well and was extremely rude and slightly aggressive. The older lady who offered us table orders and brought our food out was lovely however thank you.. We tried a new place for our Christmas catch up, we definitely will not be back, ever. After reading other reviews the food and wait time complaints seem to be in abundance.. You should probably work on that..There was another table of 3 people who’d also started complaining as they had been waiting about as long as us for their food.. We went for lunch, and our food came out after 2:30... We got there at 12:30 and all had to drive back to Perth and Manjimup..read more

We travelled from Dwellingup for a day out and looking for a nice experience to enjoy a rare opportunity. We chose the... Back Beach Cafe after seeing your advert showing your classy establishment. Unfortunately our experience left us disappointed. After initial friendly greet, we took a seat. Cafe very tired. We went with the marinated octopus and 2 groper specials and 2 warm beers.On waiting on our lunch not once but twice we were offered food obviously destined for another table. Our entree arrived... oil soaked deep fried calamari.... not our order ! Thank god....I delivered back to kitchen and again stated what we had ordered. After kitchen came out and checked out what we had actually order we finally received octopus... under welming ....Table not cleared of entree before main meal arrived.We both looked at each other... omg what is this. Reviews hugely inconsistent which is of some concern !Not to mention state of table and state of salt and pepper holders that obviously not maintained. Meal was a struggle... most was left on plate.Another concerning aspect was the confusion of staff which appears to stem from management and kitchen .In offering a final comment your business is in desperate need of direction.I wish you luck !read more

Recently had a delicious and enjoyable family dinner and would love to revisit next time we are in the area. Has an... absolutely brilliant family room so you can eat where the kids are playing rather than them being in a separate room nearby. Food was well received and demolished by all (seafood basket, chia seed tart, sausage and chips, seasonal greens, milk tart and kids plate). Everything we wanted was there. Service was relaxed and friendly and we enjoyed every minute which those who have kids know it can be more stressful than not often. Yelled at in front of other customers (in the kids play... room) by staff after a nice and polite lady inquired as to why our food was taking over 45mins. Everyone in that room was absolutely shocked. Food was cold, under cooked and soggy despite being yelled at how ‘freshly cooked’ their food is. Told manager and he didn’t seem to care. If your menu advertises one price you can't then charge something different. And if people don't ask for extras then don't assume and charge them for it. I was polite and happy to point this out and get my money back for the incorrectly charged items but when i did the guy was so rude and completely unapologetic. Just slapped the money in my hand and walked away. Hmmm customer service for you mate is 0. I think you are lucky the others work so hard and are polite and welcoming.read more

Walked to the cafe from our beautiful resort with the lure of eating on the beach. The view did not disappoint nor did... the sighting of a dolphin, but here my happiness bubble burst. The place looked like it could do with a good clean and so did the waitstaff. We waited for 45 mins for fish & chips and a pearl barely beetroot risotto whic was uneadable. The texture was like sloppy babyfood and had no seasoning. I left all but a mouthful but no one came to clear the table until we got up to leave. Then a man asked " how was it love" to which I replied with an explanation. His answer was " sorry love, do u want a voucher ". As I was leaving next day this was not an option to which he replied. "Sorry about that". Woukd not go there again, pity great location.read more

Myself and my friends came here for lunch today, service was alright, never got our meals checked and was told 30... minute waiting time which ended up being 55 minutes. We received our food, fish and chips were beautiful but squid was over cooked and prawns/ oysters had no taste to them, very bland. From the moment we entered the cafe, we were overwhelmed by the over friendly, patronising staff. The whole feel of the... place that day, was chaotic. One of our party on holiday from the Netherlands was in a wheelchair and needed to use the toilet. There was a facility for an invalid but the toilet was so low, she ended up in great difficulty and was stressed after her ordeal. Nevertheless, we decided to give it another chance. We were again disappointed on our second visit. The ambience of the cafe was over casual, unprofessional and not up to international standards . This doesn't seem to be the same place we visited in 2007. Sorry, we won't be going again.read more
